Does maia allow some domains to authenticate via LDAP and others to authenticate via MySQL or is it an all or nothing choice?  If it is an all or nothing choice, anyone have any off the cuff thoughts on how much work it'd be to update it to do ldap per-domain choice?

At the moment it's pretty much all-or-nothing; per-domain
authentication
methods is something on the feature request list (Ticket #38
<http
s://secure.renaissoft.com/maia/ticket/38>). That
ticket also
includes a user-submitted solution for authenticating
against different
servers of the same type (e.g. different IMAP servers for
different
domains, etc.).

That said, when you've got different authentication methods
in use at
your downstream domains, you might want to consider using
Maia's
internal authentication method. This creates a unified
authentication
system for all of your downstream clients, since all
authentication
credentials are stored in Maia's database. With account
auto-creation,
a randomly-generated temporary password gets e-mailed to
users the first
time Maia receives mail for them, and they can change that
password once
they login.

Current releases do not allow for this; however, Jacob
Leaver and I worked on
this about a year ago. It is partially working in the
"stats" branch, and I'm
working on porting bits of it back to the trunk. I don't
have a time frame
yet, but it is in the works.
