Ed - are you saying that postfix (which is what I use) can
actually do this based on "content" - I know it
can do rewriting of headers, etc. based on some criteria,
but I didn't know it could check content - guess I'll have
to do some hunting

Thanks.

Hi,

This isn't really a function so much of Amavis/Maia but
rather the MTA
that supports them. What you're suggesting is very easily
done with say
Postfix [ you need an MTA to support Amavis ] with aliases
or transport
maps depending on your setup.

I'd like to be able to duplicate down the road (I have a
few customers using this, and foresee that we will want to
find a way to do this), is cc/forward etc mail based on
subject line or contents. For example, it's a law firm,
and they might need to cc all mail with "Danita"
in the subject line to a particular email account. The
product we are replacing CAN do this, and I'm wondering if
there is an overlooked trick in Amavisd that might be able
to handle this, or even a third- party add- on.

Postfix doesn't do it, but postfix can all something else
(like
procmail) to do it, so it should be possible to integrate it
into your
Maia/Postfix setup. I can't tell you exactly how because
I've not done
it myself, but I do know that Postfix can be configured to
call lots of
other things as mail goes through. Aside from calling
amavisd as all
Maia/Postfix setups do, I've got it calling a greylisting
daemon, so
adding a call to procmail should be possible as well.

Postfix is not sophisticated in this area, but body_checks
work just like
header_checks (and the other types listed here:
http://ww
w.postfix.org/header_checks.5.html

As long as the content you are looking for is limited to one
line, you may
be able to use it. I think there are ways to check content
that spans more
than one line, but whatever matches first triggers whatever
action you
define. No ands, or ifs.

The postfix mailing list may be able to provide more details
about whether
these are suitable mechanisms for your requirements (and if
they are, how to
best configure them to do what you want). It should be
mentioned that simply
enabling any of these types of checks slows down Postfix
processing (I have
heard by about 40%) as each line in each message must be
compared to your
regex expression. Also, run 'postconf -m' to determine if
pcre
functionality is compiled into Postfix. If you have it, it
is faster than
regex, so it is preferred.

There are too many questions. How are you storing the
email? Are
virtual domains involved? If virtual domains are involved,
forget using
procmail. If you are delivering to Maildir folders with
some form of
virtual domains, you should be able to get maildrop to work
nicely [1].
You'd have to create a maildroprc file that would look at
the subject
line (or whatever else you want to filter). Here's another
link [2]
which may help.

I've been meaning to setup maildrop to automatically sort
my incoming
mail so that mailing list messages would be delivered to the
appropriate
folder rather than using filters in my mail client. Just
haven't found
the time yet.
