slowness

A couple things to check/change:

First, I don't see any *_destination_concurrency_limit
being set, so
you'd be using the default, ie. 2.  3+ messages would have
to wait till
one of the first 2 finish to begin.  You might set
smtp-amavis_destination_concurrency_limit = 10 (to match
your settings
in master.cf and amavisd.conf) and/or drop those settings
down.

Make sure you don't have any very large spamassassin
rulesets loaded.
You can search the mailing list for ones that really cause
problems
(from memory, it seems like there was a single rule list
that would be
about 100MB .. x 10 processes = 100% of your memory  

If possible, update your maia version, that one's pretty
old now, and I
think a few things were done to improve performance/memory
usage.  I
doubt that's the root cause of your problem, but it sure
wouldn't hurt.
