I got a reaction (e-mail) on this tutorial that I wrote on
plone.org [1] and
when I went to the page to reply, I found that the comment
was deleted.
Along with some 5 other comments on the tutorial, which I
found rather
useful to have.

Anyone have an idea on how this could have happened?

Some reasons why some comments get sometimes zapped:

* Sometimes those comments end up full of junk. Silly
questions and so,
which nobody will mind if they're weeded out.

* Pointing out errors. If the error has been fixed (often
with a
"thanks" as a reply to the original comment), it
is good to zap both
comments.

I myself often only apply the second reason.

BUT: if you found those comments useful, they probably don't
fall in one
of those categories. Perhaps someone was over-eager on the
documentation
sprint?

I can't find any information in the undo log, either, btw.
(I checked
both the main tuturial folder and the actual tutorial
pages).

Yes, I've been removing comments to the tutorial before
after fixing errors
or incorporating suggestions that they pointed out.
Actually the only
comment that you see there that's left is the least useful
one from what I
remember. (It's about a very specific and unrelated problem
with testing.)

The comment that I wanted to reply to originally was from 3
days ago. And
it's gone, too.

Maybe it's vandalism? Or a bug -- anyone seen this before?

I regularly remove comments that seem to be outdated or that
devolve into
discussions that are better done elsewhere. While I don't
know about your
tutorial in particular, this is a pretty common thing to do
among the
documentation team. Erroneous deletions happen sometimes, of
course.

Once we have some bandwidth to work on PHC again, I want to
make it much
clearer that the comments are not for general help, and
point them to the
proper resources instead. There is indeed a valid use case
of asking
questions about the content itself, but at the moment, 90%
of the comments
are from people that ask there instead of going to the
lists.

There's also the persistent bug that makes it impossible for
the owner of
a tutorial to delete comments on his own material, which
doesn't reinforce
the read comment -> incorporate changes -> remove
commment cycle.

Nah, it's probably just somebody being a bit over-eager to
clean up the
comments. If there was something valuable there, we have
backups and could
potentially go back a few days.

I realize it's overhead, but ideally I would like to be
contacted before
comments are removed.

What if I wanted to incorporate a comment into the tutorial
itself, but I
didn't have the time to do so yet? What if I don't consider
positive
feedback spam?

In this case, the clean-up was done more than sloppily. The
only comment
left is about some guy's typo.

OK. A better solution would be to update the mail that the
system sends
out, so you have a copy in the notification mail as extra
security. The
documentation list should also get a copy of any
notification mail,
similar to what Poi does (i.e. you should be able to set a
mailing list
address on the PHC root object, and that list will get BCCed
on any
comment).

Yup, accidents happen. Sorry about that.
