Images and HTML

Media Wiki will not let me combine HTML and something like
[[Image:myimage.gif]]. When I use this markup in a context
that contains
HTML, it doesn't work. I went to the information page for
the image I
uploaded and found a URL to that image. So I tried using an
<img> tag
instead, but that didn't work either. In both cases, Media
Wiki writes the
literal markup to the output file. Does anybody know how to
include an
image in HTML markup. I can't find anything in the help on
this.
