You should have a look at the pywikibot a.k.a. pywikipedia,
which is a
python framework for writing bots which run against
mediawiki sites.

general information with a focus on using it with wikipedia,

has info on using it for non-wikimedia sites using
mediawiki.
I did some work with this a year or so ago, and haven't
kept up. It
does require using the python language, but python has a
fairly easy
learning curve.
