Howdy,
I'm cc'ing this to 4 groups, the video-vertigo videoblogging developers workgroup, the vPIP users group, the blip.tv
users group, and the mefeedia users group. I'm not sure whom might be more interested. I hope you'll consider it valuable advice and not spam.
Vimeo has a very cool feature they call "cast" or credit. Basically it allows users and videomakers to specify who appears in the video or podcast. Since nearly every video and every podcast has at least one person in it this feature is simply awesome for video sharing / social networking sites.
Example of how it's used on Vimeo http://vimeo.com/jakob/videos/appears
This shows every video ever credited with Jakob Lodwick
David Meade mentioned this to me and he's not the first. I must have heard people mention how cool this feature is a dozen times.
== syndicating cast information ====
On mefeedia we aggregate TONS of videos tagged with people';s names, but they're impossible to weed out from various other tags.
example:
http://mefeedia.com/tags.htm (see the "people" section in the lower right of the page)
I also did a quick check of the media RSS spec and it IS accounted for. It's called "credit" in the mediaRSS spec. There's an example below.
from: http://search.yahoo.com/mrss
<item>
<title>The latest video from an artist</title>
<link>http://www.foo.com/item1.htm</link>
<media:credit role="producer">producer's name</media:credit>
<media:credit role="artist">artist's name</media:credit>
<.item>
What this means is like geo data which blip and others like youtube and feedburner are supporting we videobloggers, hosting providers, video sharing sites, aggregators and search providers) also have the ability to syndicate and aggregate this credit info. Hopefully I need not explain how awesome this would be for not only hosting providers like blip but also media aggregators and search engines.
== How it might be implimented ==
Vimeo's implimentation is pretty sweet. Basically in the top of the left column on every video page is a section called "credits". This shows the thumbnail icon, name, and roll for anyone involved in the video.
Example:
http://vimeo.com/271265
To add credit all any logged in user has to do is click "Add Credits" and they can type in a name and optional role.
Short, simple and sweet.
If you're interested, know another service that has an implimentation or otherwise please let me know.
I'd be particularly interested to know what the blip crew thinks. I must admit i haven't double checked, but I don't think they currently have this feature. In fact, I can't think of anyone else who has this feature.
My personal reason is selfish. I'd love to get this data into mefeedia. Like geo data and tags there's so much cool stuff we at mefeedia can potentially do with this information that our community would absolutely love.
Vimeo is syndicating this cast information, and we are collecting at least some of it on mefeedia. For example the following feed is a list of videos that Jakob Lodwick appears in.
http://www.mefeedia.com/feeds/21150/
The only negative I see is obviously there may be some privacy issues, but then again you can already search for pictures of people on google images, why not make the web of video searchable by people';s names too. I think it would be up to the host or social network how they handle these privacy issues. I haven't heard to many complaints about privacy on vimeo (quite the contrary, just praise) but then I'm not that active of a user and I haven't seen nor am I involved in any Vimeo user forums.
Peace,
-Mike mefeedia.com

Thanks mike,
Very cool.  ;I'll have to check out the feature on your site. I assume it's in the upload and post process?
Are you syndicating the data in your feeds as MediaRSS / credit and do you have an example feed I can look at on the live site?

it's a free-form text box rather than structured. I'd love to
structure it… maybe we can do that in an upcoming release.

Hey Mike,
That's similar to the Facebook (photo) tagging. (Where you tag "who" is in the photo.)
yes exactly. Devlon (of mefeedia) also made that connection.
What EBU (European Broadcasting Union) code <http://www.ebu.ch/en/technical
/metadata/specifications/role_codes.php> do you see being used for this (with the Media RSS <media:credit> element)?
"performer" and "actor" seem like the closest thing... but neither
really seem appropriate.
(Or do you see a different scheme being used?)
Yes, MediaRSS "credit" is almost exactly like the "roles" from the European broadcasting union. I'd actually never seen that before. Very interesting spec. Hopefully it will help people understand the scope and potential of implimenting credit in their site.
The difference of course between MediaRSS "credit" and EBU's "roles" is that there are no specific roles defined in the mediaRSS spec. Like tagging you can make up any roll you choose and this is the way I think it should be implimented. Indeed if you check out Vimeo's implimentation of credit they allow you to type in any name or roll using only a healthy dose of auto-complete to make suggestions. It's a well done implimentation. I can not think of anything more ideal.
For an example loging and try adding a user to the credits in the top of the right column:
It's also similar to dublin core's "creator" and "contributor" which somewhat inspired mediaRSS. I think it's important to note though how MediaRSS is much easier to impliment in a general user interface. What is of primary importance in such cases a participator or user generated media is who is in the video and only secondarily what their involvement is. This is why the role of the person is optional in mediaRSS.
