The best host?

Hi,

I have seen several guides and suggestions for getting
Mephisto (or
other rails apps) to work on different hosts. Eventually it
seems
almost everyone can get their apps to work. However as I do
not have
registered with a host yet, I was wondering if you would
recommend a
certain host.

For now my list consists of:
- Dreamhost [http:
//www.dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html]
- Site5 [http://www.site5.com/ho
sting/]
- Textdrive [http://textdrive.
com/hosting/shared]
- Railsplayground
[http://www.railsplayground.com/plans/basic/index.html]
- Railsmachine [http://railsmachine.c
om/hosting] (though info on
support for PHP, or other 'tools' is very limited)

To me they all seem fine. Dreamhost offers more space and
discounts
once you find the proper rebate code. The others offer less
space or
traffic but still a complete package of apps, and may still
be a little
cheaper. I am curious to learn which host(s):
- fits mephisto best (so easy setup, without depending on
support)
- allows for more than one rails app without charging you
- is reliable and fast

Any advice is appreciated!

I highly recommend RailsMachine but you must know that it's
not
'newbie' hosting.  It's a VPS, no control panel, no php
by default,
etc.  They are especially tailored for Rails deployment and
it's what
we run Mephistoblog on.

This really boils down to you get what you pay for.  If you
go with a
shared host your more than likely to run into issues that
will be
harder to solve.  With something like a RailsMachine VPS you
have
complete control over your system.  They also have special
gems for
making deployment much easier.

they are sold out for now. Does anyone know when they are
ready for new
customers??

I just asked Bradley, and he said "in a few
days."  If you really need
something now though, RimuHosting is a popular choice.  You
won't get
the Rails Machine gems setup though...

Just to clarify, Rails Machine has a 'railsmachine' gem on
RubyForge,
that has a lot of slick recipes for rails deployment.  But,
it
requires the server to have a specific setup that you'd
have to mimic
on any server you deploy on if you want to take advantage of
it.  It's
worth looking into if you're into capistrano.
