I want to get started with a Mephisto-based non-blog site,
and I'm
looking for the latest scoop on how to go about it.
So just to confirm a few doubts:
1. How up-to-date is the wiki - especially the Install page
and other
HowTos
2. How up-to-date is the 0.7.3 release - should I be using
this or the
svn trunk
3. (Corollary to 2) What's in the svn trunk that's not in
the 0.7.3
release? How stable is it, and is it worth it?
4. Is Ruby 1.8.6 and Rails 1.2.3 good enough - or do I need
Rails Edge
for
a) 0.7.3
b) the svn trunk
Any other tips for a mephisto newbie?

Edge rails for trunk, stable for 0.7.3. Best bet: use the
0.7 branch.
Trunk is pretty stable, but I wouldn't bother with it
unless you're
comfortable with rails and will fix bugs.

But there are certain plugins that may require edge
Mephisto. I know
James Crisp's contact form
<http://jamescrisp.blogspot.com/2
007/03/contact-feedback-form-plugin-for.html>
to be one example; no idea how many more there are.

Thanks for the replies - some clarifications would set me
straight:
> But there are certain plugins that may require edge
Mephisto.
Hmm. I'd like stability. But I'd like to be able to use
plugins too.
Do I really need mephisto trunk for that? Also what about
HAML, is
that in 0.7.3
> > Edge rails for trunk, stable for 0.7.3. Best bet:

To be clear: are you saying that the 0.7 branch is more
recent than
the 0.7.3 release, but more stable than the trunk? And if
so:
- Does (0.7 branch) it support plugins
- Does it require edge rails
- Will it be released as a stable branch soon.
Is there a tag or branch that will give me new features and
plugins
but which works with Rails 1.2.3??
Remind me how to get rails edge again?

There's nothing really unstable about trunk, other than its
dependence
on edge rails. Rails 2.0 is removing deprecations and
changing things
that could break Mephisto at any time. Mephisto itself is
fine
though. I use it on all my installations.

Do I really need mephisto trunk for that? Also what about HAML, is that in 0.7.3 You would need trunk for haml or erb support.
Pascal.

Okay so first I decided to go with the latest. I'm using
InstantRails
here so bear with me.
I installed InstantRails
Got the mephisto trunk from SVN
Set up the database.
Presto - it runs. Download a theme - errors everywhere.
Another theme
- same issue.
Okay I think. I'm using rails 1.2.3 with mephisto trunk. I'd
better
get edge rails. But how in InstantRails (windows)?
I find gem update --source .... somewhere and go with that.
Takes a while but all of the rails gems update. Try it all
again.
Nope.
Now I'm getting problems with gem "can't activate
actionpack version
blah, already activated version greater-than-blah".
Damn. Google google - no help damn. Must be a version
problem.
Okay I give up. Back to basics.
New clean install of InstantRails (with rails 1.2.3)
Download and unzip mephisto stable 0.7.3.
Install, set up database, run server.
Whoops - see this error below:
This one should work. At least with the trunk I got it
working up to
installing themes. With the "stable" setup it
doesn't even run.
WordPress is looking tempting. Please someone tell me I've
done
something obvious wrong and save me from PHP.

You are in luck, edge rails just broke something in a plugin
mephisto
relies on. Again, use 0.7 stable

Thanks, but that NameError above is using rails stable
release 1.2.3
and mephisto stable release 0.7.3. How come?

I don't know, it works fine for me. Go into script/console
and type
User and see what happens.
