Hi Folks,
I have created a tutorial on how to markup (X)HTML documents
using the
hCard properties:
http://
www.xfront.com/microformats/hCard.html
Comments welcome.

Hi Roger,
This is a nice step by step tutorial presentation.
One critique is that the first couple of examples with Dr.
John Q. Public
are invalid hCard because you cannot *only* use
"fn" with a formatted name
that is more than two words - you *must* also use
"n" and its subproperties.
See: http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard#Implied_.22n.2
2_Optimization
Consider changing your first and second examples to only
state "John Public"
and therefore able to use the implied N optimization rule.
This way you
introduce people to the common easy case first, and then
show the more
detailed example with "n" and subproperties later.
Thanks,
Tantek

Nice work, but in maximised Firefox, at 1280x1024, I find
the red
examples too small and closely bunched to read. Would you
like a
screenshot?

This isn't in any way a criticism of your tutorial, but,
further to
recent discussion, it's worth noting that not only does the
tutorial
include no mention of a profile URI, but also that, until
now, nobody
had even thought that worthy of comment.

Searching the archives, I see a discussion of profile URIs
as far
back as July of 2005, less than a month after this list
began:

rmats-discuss/2005-July/

So it's not a new idea. It just hasn't gained much adoption
yet.

Very nice Roger.
Where you say "Why isn't it hCard? Apparently there are
some
historical reasons for it, but I do not know the
reasons." in slide 3,
the simple answer is that in vCard, the root property is
VCARD, as in:
BEGIN:VCARD
[ ... stuff here ... ]
END:VCARD
As far as I know, that's the reason.

I should have added 'so because hCard gets all its
fieldnames from
vCard, this is carried across'.

The main intention of a tutorial is to _use_ it to learn
something, not to
comment on it. Besides that the writer of such a tutorial
generally learns
most of it.
If the tutorial is correct and maybe useful, the correct way
to handle that
would be to include a link in the wiki. Simply defining any
tutorial not from
one of the famous elite microformats authors as unnecessary
nonsense is the
fastest way to make microformats a secret elite format,
unknown to and unused
by the rest of the world.
