Okay, so what does a guy do in a case like this then? I'd
previously
raised the point of abbr not really representing an
abbreviation in
these cases in another thread, but it seems that it's
nonetheless
accepted as a form of abbreviation.

So what do you suggest I do if I can't use abbr?
