I noticed the following on the MVLS
(licensing.microsoft.com) site:

=======
File Types Available For Download
The software downloads provided by MVLS are designed to be
launched (or
booted) directly from the machine on which they are
downloaded. They
cannot be made into a separate boot disk for installation
onto another
computer. If you are downloading a new release of server
software or
operating system software, it must be downloaded onto a
machine that
already has a prior operating system.

If you require server software or operating system software
on an
installation disk (also known as an ISO image), please order
media
through your channel partner. Your channel partner may also
be able to
provide you with a software installation.

Microsoft is aware that customers may want both types of
software
downloads and we are investigating ways to provide this. We
apologize
for the inconvenience.
=======

So, it seems that unless you have an MSDN VL subscription,
ordering VL
media is the only way at the moment.

I'd like to again mention the Microsoft Developers Network
Academic
Alliance. From http://msdn.microsoft.com/academic/program/overv
iew/default.aspx :

"The MSDN Academic Alliance is an annual membership
program for departments that
teach and utilize technology such as Computer Science,
Engineering, and
Information Systems departments. The membership provides a
complete,
inexpensive solution to keep academic labs, faculty and
students on the
leading edge of technology."

One of the advantages of this program is that you get ISO
images and Volume
Licenses for most of Microsoft's products, if you qualify.
I don't know how picky Microsoft is about deciding who
qualifies. My
department does, obviously, but there are lots of other
departments
who might quality. It's cheap (e.g. $800/yr for everything)
and there
are no negatives.
