Thanks to everybody who checked in on my Mac problems.
Clearing the cache in Safari worked and the user is able to get back on
AirBears. She will be resetting prefs in Office programs next as
well as updating the versions of her programs where needed.
I've learned a lot about the new Intel Macs over the last few days.
I appreciate all of the expertise everybody has shown.
Sincerely
Bill Gross

Hi Bill,
Thanks for sharing your printing problem and solution. This is good
information that should help some people on campus. I'm cc'ing the
Magnet list where the Mac community will see it.
Christopher Chin is correct - Internet Explorer on OS X doesn't
work
with AirBears - it hangs during authentication. Microsoft stopped
updating IE several years ago. The last version was 5.2.3. I want
to
echo his suggestion to use FireFox or Safari - both are very good
browsers. You can import bookmarks into FireFox from the File menu.
If you're running OS X 10.4, Safari bookmarks are imported the same
way: File -> Import bookmarks
If you're running OS X 10.3, importing into Safari is a little more
complicated, but here are the steps
(modified from:
http://hdstock.mit.edu/answer.php?id=7133):
1) Enable the Debug menu in Safari by quitting Safari, then
a) Go to Go > Utilities > Terminal and
type:
defaults write
com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
b) Press Enter.
2) Open Safari again; the Debug menu should be visible.
Go to Debug > Import Bookmarks, select the
bookmarks.html file
(or favorites.html in the case of IE), and click Import.
3) You can turn off the Debug menu by typing the following command
in
the Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu
0
Your problem with Word sounds like bad preferences. I suggest
deleting the user preferences for Office and then relaunching Word.
If you have the Office uninstaller, use it. If not, you can
manually
delete the following files and then relaunch Office:
Users/user-xyz/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Normal
Users/user-xyz/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.autoupdate.plist
Users/user-xyz/Library/Preferences/
Users/user-xyz/Library/Preferences/
com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist
Users/user-xyz/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.setupassistant.plist
Users/user-xyz/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Word.plist
Users/user-xyz/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/
I hope this helps!

Hi
First a problem a was able to solve.
I had a visiting researcher who couldn't print to a networked HP
1320.
Her computer is a brand new Apple Mac Book Pro running OS X;
an
Intel based laptop.
She connects to the network using AirBears.
The problem was that even though the printer showed up correctly
when created, and could be pinged successfully, it would not
print. It came up with an error that the job was terminated
unexpectedly.
The bottom line:
Apple packaged the OS with drivers for its old non-Intel
computers. They don't always work for the new Intel based
machines. Once I downloaded the correct drivers from HP and
installed them in the Library folder, the user could print
successfully.
Download the Universal Binary drivers
See this site for instructions on how to manually replace drivers
in Mac OS:

I know there are a lot of good Mac techs out there, but I'm passing
this on anyway since it took me a while to catch on to the problem,
and maybe this will save someone a headache or two.
Now, I have some other problems that I am still trying to suss out,
also dealing with a Mac Book Pro, though not the same one:
Problem #1: Internet Explorer and Safari don't authenticate to
Airbears. Safari does not open auth screen and Explorer gives
encryption error.
Problem#2: Most applications are slow. Word takes over 30 seconds
to open a document (when opened from Mail). Excel takes about 20
seconds.
The owner used the migrating function to install all of her
software and preference settings.
Many thanks for any help or even pointing me in the right
direction...
