BrainJams - an unconference for knowledge
networking, or let's talk face to face
Come to the BrainJams session Saturday, February
25, from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm, in the Lipman
Room, Barrows Hall on the UC Berkeley campus if
you would like to participate in a conversation
with people from a variety of organizational and
disciplinary backgrounds to discuss current uses
of technology that might be applied to your
research, your field work, your publications, or
other projects and creative pursuits. Sponsored
by UC Berkeley's Chief Information Officer,
cofacilitators for this event will be Lee
Felsenstein and Chris Heuer. Free, advance
registration is necessary; space is limited.
BrainJams are self-organized events in which
participants grapple with complex issues in a
limited amount of time - a single day. The
fundamental challenge for participants is how to
best use social media and Web 2.0 technologies -
with a focus on accessible tools for working
people, not trends for technologists - to
communicate about projects and share knowledge
that can spur innovation and foster positive
change.
Face-to-face conversations to address problems
and share ideas have taken place in the social
commons for centuries - at the forum, the pub,
the café, the town hall. Digital and networking
technologies now make it possible to scale and
share the results and records of knowledge
networking in powerful new ways.
First held in 2005, the event in Berkeley will be
the third in the Bay Area, and the first to be
hosted at an academic institution. The February
25 event will be limited to the first 120
registrants; there will be a number of seats held
for attendees from the UC Berkeley community.
