We just bought several Dell Optiplex 745’s and noticed that after we installed the Symantec client we could not boot up into Normal mode, kept getting a black screen.

Found this article with the fix and applied the fix.   The fixed worked for me on several different 745’s.

Situation:
You install Symantec Antivirus 10.1 or Symantec Client Security 3.1 to a Dell Optiplex 745 computer with a dual core chip. When you restart the computer, Windows cannot start in normal mode.

Solution:
To fix the problem, start the computer in Safe mode. Then, update to Symevent version 12.1.3.11 or later and restart the computer in Normal mode

A later version of symevent is included in Maintenance Patch
1 for SCS
3.1.5, but not in 3.1.5 proper.

MP1 fixes some other bugs in 3.1.5 bad enough that I had
hoped we would
skip 3.1.5 and wait for 3.1.6 .
