March Micronet Meeting Topics:
I.   Centrally-Hosted Code Repository Service

Steve Masover of IST - Application Architecture will describe and discuss a centrally-hosted Subversion repository service that IST is preparing to offer the campus (pending approval of a budget request in the current cycle). ; The presentation will include an overview of how version control works and why it is a central component of robust software development environments.  A description of the proposed service will follow:  how it will be accessed by developers on campus, how it will be structured to facilitate code-sharing, how Subversion is expected to integrate with deployments to the IST Webfarm, and how IT groups using the service will be empowered to maintain and govern write-access to their own repositories.  A context-setting overview of what IST Application Architecture is providing to IST developers will frame a request for input from Micronet about what a central application architecture group can do for departmental IT staff; that discussion is intended to dovetail with the second major topic of this month's Micronet meeting.

II.  Creating an active community of application / service developers on campus

Does creation of an active community of application/service developers on campus warrants forming a new group?  Or should such a group somehow be a part of or attached to Micronet?  These questions were raised at the February meeting , and will get a full airing on March 20th. ; Please join in this discussion with Steve Masover and Ryan Means.

Upcoming Meetings:

April Micronet Meeting
:  April 17. Speaker:  Harold Pakulat, Associate
Director IST Service Desk

May Micronet Meeting:  May 15.  Kevin Haney from IST and Kevin Burney from COIS/BFIT  on Vista and the nuts and bolts of converting a department/lab/group to VISTA

Would your group like to make a presentation to Micronet?  Some topics of interest to Micronetters include presentations on:

--Departmental business resumptions plans-- does your department have a blue print for getting back in business after a disaster, how to restore data to computers, purchasing new computers, how to maintain operations off-site for a period of time, departmental website, conducting classes, etc.

--Job training and acquiring new skills for IT staff.  What are the classifications for IT jobs at UC Berkeley and what are possible job paths in this system?

--How to set up an informal expertise database, how to facilitate birds-of-a-feather meetings and exchanges for IT staff with common issues.

Micronet Meetings are held in 150 University Hall, the third Tuesday of each month
(perhaps skipping months in summer) from 10:30 - noon.
