UC Berkeley mainframe TN3270 emulation going SSL/TLS- STATUS UPDATE - Action on June 18

Next Monday June 18th the mainframe technical support group
will make the
final change associated with the implementation of secure
(ssl/tls) TN3270
connectivity to UC Berkeley's mainframe host systems.

The final change is to remove access to the mainframe using
a VPN client and
the Lonicera server. This connection method has been used
primarily by PPS
and OPTRS users. Next Monday we will remove access to all
mainframe
applications including PPS and OPTRS from lonicera.

All PPS and OPTRS users and other users connecting to the
mainframe via
lonicera should already be using the ironwood-mod2ssl
profile in the
Hummingbird Neighborhood program group for connecting to the
mainframe and
getting access to their applications.

If you have questions please contact the IST Service Desk at
510-642-4920 or
give me a call.

Subject: UC Berkeley mainframe TN3270 emulation going
SSL/TLS- STATUS UPDATE
- OPTRS/PPS users can now direct connect to
ironwood.berkeley.edu

Beginning today, Monday May 14, OPTRS/PPS users
(VPN+Lonicera) can connect
directly to the ironwood host system without using the VPN
client and
lonicera. To accomplish the direct connect to ironwood and
assuming you have
the Hummingbird Host Explorer package installed, open the
Hummingbird
Neighborhood program group and use the ironwood-mod2ssl
profile to connect.
You will get the logon screen you’re accustomed to seeing.
After logging on
you will see the application menu screen although it will be
a bit busier
looking that when you connected through lonicera. The
OPTRS/PPS applications
will now be part of the more global menu of applications
supported on the
mainframe. Of course you can tailor the (supersession) menu
list to your
liking once you’ve moved to the ironwood direct connect
method.

If you have a MAC computer and use the Brown University
TN3270 X application
along with the VPN client and Lonicera to connect to the
ironwood host, the
direct connection to ironwood.berkeley.edu is also now
available. The TN3270
X emulator client should be configured to request an SSL
connection and the
host name is set to ironwood.berkeley.edu. Please refer to
the FAQ “I am a
MAC user and have installed the Brown University TN3270
emulator for more
details at:

http://security.berkeley.edu/Secure-TN3270-Emu
lation-FAQ.html#mac.

The VPN+ Lonicera connection method will remain viable until
June 18 to
allow plenty of time for the final move to direct
connections to the
ironwood host. Once you begin using the ironwood-mod2ssl
profile to direct
connect we recommend you not switch between the connection
methods. On
June18 we will remove the application menus from Lonicera.
At that time even
though the VPN client can still connect to the mainframe
host, the menu
application options will no longer be available.

If you have questions please contact the IST Service Desk at
510-642-4920 or
give me a call.
