| Eudora crashing |

|

Eudora crashing is becoming a "huge" issue here
at Haas School of
Business for the last three or four months when more and
more
applications are upgraded to Eudora version 6.2+. In some
worst
cases, Eudora crashes more than five times a day. We have
tried
everything that we can think of: deleting Eudora.ini file,
installing
various Eudora versions (including rolling back to version
5), and
various versions of the anti virus. We have even tried new
build
PCs. Nothing helped. The issue would crop up from time to
time.
Deleting the Eudora.ini file may give a couple good days
then it
would flair up again.
All reported crashing Eudoras are configured to use imap.
Most of
them contain a fair number of mail folders and are used
heavily. Some users have reported that it crashes each time
they
click on certain html messages.
I know there were some discussions about Eudora crashing on
this list
one or two months ago. I would like find out:
1. Are there any users who have experienced the Eudora
crashing
problem do NOT use Calmail as their incoming mail server?
This will
help us determine if the problem may be related to the MTA
software
CommuniGatePro that both Calmail and Haas run.
2. What kind of support contract does campus have
with
Qualcomm? Whom should we contact to get the direct support
from
Qualcomm? We have started switching some users to MS
Outlook, but is
not a solution, just a work around. Since Eudora is the
email client
that Campus supports, it should be a reliable application.
3. Of course any helpful tips will be
appreciated.
Thanks.

Yes. It happened to us and we generally use the
Davis-Etchevery

Switch to Thunderbird.

I switched to thunderbird a while ago, once you're used to
it, it's
perfectly viable.
I use many folders/mailboxes and filters as well, generally
handling
about 100 non-spam messages a week.

There has been some hope that Eudora 7, which is now
distributed for
general use at software.berkeley.edu , would be more stable.
Although there other choices in mail programs, I can see how
one might not
want to migrate an office full of users who are quite
familiar with
Eudora..

Xiaoyan,
I use the IMAP configuration and experienced constant crashed with Eudora
version 7.0.0.16.
Here are a few things that helped to minimize the problem:
1) Maintain no more than 800 messages (combined total) in the shared
folders.
(when we exceed 1000 messages, crashes are more often.)
2) Synchronize all the IMAP users' Options.
3) Create filters.
4) Run Spybot weekly (noticeable improvement with response time
& crashes).
This is not a complete fix, but it has acceptably improved the situation
for us.
If you can, stick to version 6.2.3.4; it appears to be more stable for
the IMAP configuration, but it will also occasionally crash.

Margo and All,
Are all (most) of the crashes with IMAP users?
With POP, I have 3000 messages in 55 mailboxes. The only
crashes
were in the Windows 6.x versions with corrupted/bad GIF
images
(embedded?). I have been using Eudora since the early
90's.
I have just started using a CalMail filter to eliminate junk
to my
old uclink/uclink4 addresses. This has eliminated 95% of
the junk
email coming to Eudora since it stays on the CalMail server.

Greetings,
A new twist showed up today. It's an 8 kb JPEG that
seizes Eudora
up on the same way as the infinite GIF's! Got 4 of them
puppies
today! Have to figure a new strategy. Maybe set the
embedded folder
so that it can be written to but not read from. Then, if I
want to
look at specific embedded content, I can go do so.

Hey Everyone,
We have been working with Qualcomm on some of these issues.
Larry
and others, it would be helpful if we could grab a copy of
the bad
mail, we are sending them to Qualcomm for investigation. I
would
like to work with anyone who is experiencing crashes.

| Eudora crashing |

|

- Filters can make Eudora more, rather than less, stable, especially the
way filters interact with Eudora's own Junk filtering. Especially
with the implicit Junk filter involved, it is possible to get into a
situation of circular filtering. Watch where messages are migrating on
the server or locally, they can move around a lot.
- The stability of Eudora is greatly affected by the number of
messages and mailboxes left open, these usually appear as little letter
and inbox tray icons near the bottom of the Eudora screen, when you
get a lot open you can't see what the icons are any more and people have
been known to inadvertently have hundreds of messages open.
- Eudora crashes more when there are more than 1000 messages in the
Inbox, but there can be a total of many, many more than that in all the
combined folders. If a total of 1000 is causing problems I'd wonder about
local system memory shortage and hitting other limits like mail
server disk space quota.
