Hello Micronetters,

I've got a couple of calls into CalShare folks, but I thought I'd put it out on the list as well. Facilities Services (PPCS) has a CalShare (ms sharepoint) site. We're using it to coordinate a project. My question has to do with the Project Plans that we've put on the site. My initial impression was that updates were made to the project plan (created in MS Project) through the CalShare project page directly. But there's also a link in this project to "Project Plans", which opens up in MS Project on my machine. It looks like this plan is an actual MS Project file located at the Sharepoint site, but I don't seem to be able to make any changes. Maybe that's a permissions issue? At any rate, this is all new to me, so any insights or pointers greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bond

I have limited experience, but I know that in our case I have uploaded files to calshare and have to check them out to make changes and save them. Otherwise they open as read only. I also discovered that I can't use Firefox. Everything looks like it's working fine (ie. no error messages) but it actually doesn't save any of the changes. Very annoying. Unfortunately that means I have to use Internet Explorer for Calshare.

Bond,

To modify a document that is stored in CalShare you do need to modify it using the appropriate application,  such as word for a .doc file or excel for an .xls and .mpp for MS Project.  Modifications to files stored on CalShare do not take place on the server.  The file is always download,  modified and then uploaded.  This sometimes does not look like it is the case since depending on your configuration Word, Excel or other Office applications can actually be running in an Internet explorer window.

Depending on the browser you are using and how the Site Administrator has configured the library you are using there are several possible  ways to open a file up for editing.  In any case the option you want to look for is “Edit in Project221; or something like that. ; If you just click on a file in CalShare the file will open in read only mode.

If you have specific questions about the site you are using contact the Site Administrator of that site, or the person who granted you access.

Michael

Monica,

When you click on a file to edit it from Fire Fox, the file is being downloaded to your machine, and usually ends up in some temp directory. ; When you make changes and click Save, the changes are saved but to the version in the temp location. If you save the file to a location you know, you can then upload it again to CalShare.   Since CalShare (Microsoft SharePoint 2007) is part of the overall Microsoft Office Suite of applications there is a much more robust and tighter integration when using CalShare with IE, and office on a Windows platform.

I use this extention and have had a pretty good (not perfect) success using CalShare: http://ietab.mozdev.org/
