I just heard word that there is now volume licensing for MS
Vista
available from CDW. Does this mean we can buy 100 licenses
and use the
same installation key for each installation of Vista?

As far as I know, this licensing scheme applies to our VL
contract:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/plan
/volact.mspx
So installation keys are not required, but activation keys
are required.

But that begs the question: presumably someone has to pay
someone for
the license used (either MAK or KMS), or is the campus
providing
blanket coverage? The technical methodology is clear enough,
but I
admit I don't understand the campus administrative side.
How many KMS do we need across campus? Our initial Vista
presence is
likely to be less than the KMS minimum, so we either
piggy-back on an
existing one, or purchase licenses against the campus MAK
(from CDWG)?

Not claiming to understand that either , but this

The Calshare site mentioned there also documents a pilot KMS

Economics is seeing a lot of Vista machines in the hands of
students
and visitors. Vista deployment in our managed systems is at
least 6
months away, though new equipment is purchased with Vista
Enterprise
in mind.
What we do need is to be able to bring up a couple of
systems soon as
support test-beds. Probably one in AD, and one stand-alone,
so that we
can mimic most cases. So we will not have anything like
enough
installed machines to support our own KMS in the short to
medium term.
A KMS is certainly attractive for managed systems, and it is
one less
license to track during (re)deployment of machines. Of
course, a
shared KMS would have to divvy up the license charges.
CDWG lists Business licenses, not Enterprise (as of last
week,
anyway). Are they supplying campus Enterprise MAK licenses?

The official UC options available for purchasing Vista and
other MS products at Berkeley are the Microsoft Select and
Microsoft Consolidated Campus Agreement (MCCA). Under
Select you purchase individual licenses (and software
assurance, if desired) and under MCCA you essentially are
purchasing an annual subscription, but don't own the
licenses. I believe that there are 3-4 enrollment periods
for MCCA subscription per year (hopefully David Willson can
chime in here with the exact dates). More information can
be found at the campus Vista site at:

I highly recommend IST running a central KMS infrastructure.
It requires very little administration. Basically you set
it up and
setup your OS patching strategy and the machine does the
rest. We have not had a single problem with ours in the
past 9 months.

p.s. Re the KMS issue is still in flux. I know that the
campus
departments who have piloted Vista (Kevin Burney's group and
??the Law
School??) have put up their own KMS boxes. During the Vista
project we
did discuss having a central KMS service run out of IST, but
when we last
discussed it a few months ago there didn't seem to be
enough
interest/movement towards Vista adoption to warrant it.
I would be interested in feedback from this community about
interested in
a KMS service, and can work to help develop one if there is
sufficient
demand.

Speaking from the security perspective, I believe that the
KMS option
also offers the potential for better license management for
the campus
and a way to help to mitigate against license abuse of
MAKs.

There is a contact email/e-mail address for MCCA enrollment
on the page
Liz cites below. Note also that this CDW-G site (also linked
off that page):
http://www.cdwg.com

states that "THE 2007-2008 MCCA OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD
IS CLOSED".
Perhaps if you write to Paul Cardamone (the account manager

A few things to note from my understanding of the MS
licensing available
to us:
* Vista Enterprise is only available to us by first
having a valid
Vista Business license and then also having an active
support/upgrade
contract (either Software Assurance through MS Select, or
covered under
a MCCA enrollment). If the support ever lapses then the
license reverts
back to just Vista Business.
* Neither MS Select or MCCA offer Vista licenses from
scratch. As
long as the machine came with an OEM license for Windows Pro
(i.e.
Windows XP Professional) then enrolling in MCCA gives you
Vista upgrade
rights immediately. Or if using MS Select then CDWG part
1061560
($49.44) will upgrade to Vista Business, or CDWG part
1061566 ($63.80)
will upgrade to Vista Enterprise (basically Vista Business
plus Software
Assurance). Or, if purchased within 90 days of purchasing
the machine
with it's OEM license you can buy just plain Software
Assurance CDWG
part 1061561 ($14.35).
* Vista Basic, Home Premium, and Ultimate aren't
available through
either MS Select or MCCA, so to get the home-based features
like Media
Center or DVD Maker we have to buy retail licenses at normal
retail
prices instead of anything through a volume licensing
program.
(Although if used just to test and provide support for end
users having
volume-licensed versions of MSDN OS per person using the
systems is
technically an option that might be cost-effective in some
setups.)
If anyone believes that those are incorrect understandings
of our
license agreements I'd love to hear better information.
