email connection for copy machine / scanner?

I'm hoping that a Micronet member has set up the "scan
to email"
function on one of the Ricoh / Lanier copy machines that are
so
popular on campus and can save me some time with mine....

Is there a way to do it without getting an email account for
the
machine itself?

If not, how does one get the account?

Can the campus SMTP relay authenticate without an email
account for
an on-campus source IP?

If the machine can be so configured, is it acceptable to use
direct
mailing to calmail addresses?

Thanks!

Ted,

*If* all of your potential scan-to-email recipients use the
same
incoming mail server, just use that MX record for the
copier's SMTP
server. So, if all potential recipients are berkeley.edu, use
calmail.berkeley.edu as the copier's SMTP server.

(The SMTP server requires no authentication for delivery to
a local
mailbox. This is, for example, how berkeley.edu e-mail users

receive e-mail from the rest of the world -- without
authentication.)

If you have users at a variety of mail hosts, then you've
got a
tougher situation. Try contacting calmail folks to see if
they can
help to work something out, such as IP-based authentication.
 Worth a
shot!
