Hello
I have been seeing a particular problem on 4 different computers, and on
one of them, it has recurred 4 times.
OS=Win2000 and XP, fully updated
SCS v.3
Eudora 7
The problem:
A user complains that Eudora won't open. when I go to investigate,
the in.mbx file has grown from a reasonable size to 4 GB overnight.
Here is the solution I have been using:
I restore the file from back-up.
However, for one user, it keeps happening. I have scanned the
computer and the user shares on the server where the email resides.
The servers were clean, but the workstation had Hacktool.NetCat and
Adware.HotBar.
(note...I wrote this letter a few weeks back and decided to hold of
and try cleaning both server and workstation with Ad-Aware, Spybot,
Symantec, Stinger, and individual tools. Now the problem has
recurred)
The in.mbx file, at 4 GB is too big for me to open with anything like
Wordpad, so I can't look at it for analysis. I could try sending it
on to Symantec or Qualcomm next time.
I couldn't find any articles that indicate if Hacktool would cause the
behavior with the in.mbx file in Eudora. It could be just a red
herring.
I have written to consult calmail (3/28/06) but don't know if they ever
found a reason for this. Not being critical; I know its easy for
things to fall through the cracks and they are usually very helpful.
Has anybody seen this or maybe even figured out the mechanics of the
problem?
Also, I would like to call Eudora if nobody on Campus has seen
this. Who is our contact there?
Thanks
Bill Gross
