I was surprised to see this suggestion on the HR website:
  1. When hiring an employee who claims to have already cleared a campus criminal background check, how can departments accurately verify a previous fingerprint session?
  2. To find out if an individual has already had a criminal background check, departments can send the UC Police Department the full name, date of birth, and social security number of the individual in question to: camillenuclink.berkeley.edu or terricuclin4.berkeley.edu
I've always followed the proscription against emailing such info.  Is Calmail's use of secured connections sufficient to make this not an issue?

Thanks, Michael

Hi, Michael

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. I can not believe
anyone is still
putting out such information with out regard to security or
safeguarding
a persons identity (SSN w/DOB and Name, the person with that
info can do
a great deal of damage to the owner).

Does this mean the campus and HR will be held responsible if
someone
follows their advice and emails such sensitive info via
email to UC
Police and so on. Makes me very nervous especially knowing
the kind of
information they have available over there and are they
safeguarding it
appropriately or is this just a matter of a web site manager
not
thinking when putting info on the site or what?

Many campus e-mail users will have a POP e-mail client on
their
desktop computer. Such a message would instantly taint the
user's
outbox.

Thanks for the heads-up -- I'll make sure my department's
HR staff
knows about these bad instructions, so that they never, ever
do this!
