Hi Lucia,
In addition to the ideas others have suggested, sometimes
the battery
manufacturer will take back the old battery for disposal as
part of
the cost to purchase the new battery.
When I last bought a replacement battery from APC, they
provided a
free, pre-paid UPS address label. I just packed the old
battery in
the box the new one came in and stuck on the return label,
and UPS
took it away in their next visit to our office.
It seems like nowadays, more and more manufacturers of toxic
stuff
are beginning to take responsibility for the eventual
disposal of the
item.
