Thread: Some problems with Miranda

Some problems with Miranda

Hello. I am a Miranda user by several months. I think it's a
very good multi-protocol client.

I have anyway some problems with Miranda:

1) When the client disconnects, for some line problems,
Miranda does not reconnect automatically. I use actually
only MSN. If it's not a bug, I would ask to add an
auto-reconnect feature.

2) File Transfer incoming is signaled only in the tray icon.
It could be also signaled with a text log on the message
window.

3) when I want to block a contact, I must change the Ignore,
the Typing and the Visibility settings. These settings can't
be putted in a common setting group?

Another problem is the db. I think it's a little messy. It
contains settings, history and plugin settings.

I think a good example is Firefox:

a) global and user settings
b) a separate file for history
c) plugins must have them setting file(s)
d) global and user plugins

This list is for development, meaning code/design issues.
The problems
you describe below should be taken to the forums.
However...

There are multiple reconnect plugins.

It could be, as far as I know it's not, could probably be
done with a plugin.

When I want to block a contact I right click and click
"block", I haven't
experienced the multiple settings. Some users like the
strict control.

There are multiple threads on this issue in the forums, if I
remember
right its never come to an actual resolution the developers
can agree
with.

Hey Lucas,

Donno if your mail has been answered - Think something may
have just come
through.

1) There are a few plugins that cover reconnection, I use
KeepStatus which
is avaliable from : http://www.pboon.nl/
projects.htm or the usual Miranda
Plugin page. It seems to cover all of my possible
disconnection issues, so
I recommend it.

2) The messaging module you are using should contain an
option for this,
In my case I am using Tabsrmm and the option can be found at

Options->Message Sessions->Event
Notifications->Announce Events of Type :

3) The contact list block has a state where it blocks all
the events
stated, the default icon for it is the exclemation mark - if
you click it,
it will set all of the states for that contact. Otherwise,
right clicking
on the contact and blocking them is a nice quick solution.

Regards,
  Matthew

Thanks Matthew Wolfe, I'll try them

Excuse me if I posted also not-development questions. By now
I'll
discuss only about the database.

I tried to search, but nothing... an evidence thread with
link to FAQ
thread could be useful...

Anyway, what do you think about MY proposal? I requote it:

-----------------------------------------
a) global and user settings
b) a separate file for history
c) plugins must
have them setting file(s)
d) global and user plugins
-----------------------------------------

Honestly I don't see any more merit to a logical file split
than I see
in keeping everything in one file. I've used Miranda since
the
beginning and have had lots of problems (like none of the
reconnection
plugins working 100% ), but the
comprehensive database file hasn't
been one of those problems.

i have to agree - i don't care if the data is in seperate files or not, but you see a lot of 'complaints' on the forums about 'files everywhere' and 'cleaning up the folders9; etc - i very much doubt adding to the number of files would be appreciated

Mh. This is a wrong problem. Usually users are dissatisfied by cache
huge files, not by .ini files.

not according to what i read on the  forums

On the contrary, separating config files will reduce most problems
between plugins.

you think? what about, to pick one real-life example, trying to read clist background colour for a plugin';s embedded clist frame? are you wanting seperate config files for different clists? will they be compulsory or optional? plugin developers dont need the extra hassle and risks of managing this stuff. the db is used (rightly or wrongly) throughout miranda plugins for communication - making this kind of change is a huge amount of work and will make life very difficult for developers, necessitate a lot of re-engineering and break a lot of stuff

Furthermore separating settings and history is useful when you must
uninstall a plugin or delete the history.

maybe so - but i'm one person who doesn't cacre about a few extra bytes in the db left over from an uninstalled plugin - and i'l bet most other users are the same in that respect, and there are perfectly functional plugins to remove history
