Jorge,

I originally wanted to reply a few weeks back when you
posted a previous
warning on the list, but then dropped it. Since you are
bringing this up
again, allow me a comment here:

I know Nerdboy (Jeffrey) through many onlist and offlist
conversations for
some 7 or 8 years now, and for that reason I am pretty sure
that whenever
someone like him disappears without a trace, after
consistently providing
very generous assistance to countless people for years, it
can be assumed
that something rather serious is going on - which I'm
afraid may not
necessarily be business-related.

Of course I am spreading rumours here, and I want this to be
understood as
such. I honestly don't know what is the deal; all I am
trying to say is that
I cannot imagine that Nerdboy runs off with a few Dollars
and sacrifices
years of building a good reputation like a low-life crook.

It is a common problem and risk when dealing with (or
running) one-man
businesses, because almost none of those tiny companies
actually have an
emergency/fallback plan in place. For instance, quite a few
collegues from
the Mivascript community disappeared like that over the
years (which is
actually much smaller and tighter than the Merchant groups,
so the contacts
are usually closer), and even then in only very few cases we
were able to
find out what actually happened. Which was at times very
saddening.

I hope you don't misunderstand my message and by no means I
want to diminish
your feeling of betrayal. But sometimes there are things at
work that are
out of our control.

However, concluding and suggesting never to pay a
downpayment for a custom
job because of a single bad experience that you made is
unreasonable. You
may not realize how many times programmers are actually the
ones running
after defaulting clients: Just ask yourself what for example
had been your
fallback plan, if once Nerdboy completed your custom project
you had been
out of business?

The idea of such downpayment is exactly to spread the risk
in a more
balanced way between the two parties.

Thanks,

markus

Ariel, just keep in mind NOT TO HIRE "NERD BOY"
, I contracted him on
November and paid in advance, he took my money and didnt
gave my a single
line of code... I would say never pay anyone unless the job
is done... too
bad for those honest programmers... good luck !

This is a mailing list. We get all of your messages, you
get all of
our messages. It's a fairly simple concept. You knew that
when you
signed up for it, no?
