There are two sides here for those who want to save time,
and I think
the savings are there.

When I currently get all those list emails, I scan quickly,
 find a
THREAD that interests me and follow it, ignoring all those
multiple
posts that don't interest me.

Now - all I have to do is subscribe to a FORUM, and get an
email of the
FIRST post that creates a new thread. Now, my working habit
will be
greatly simplified. I can more easily find threads that I
am interested
in, and then instead of scanning for emails in that thread,
I can see
them all with a single click.

6 of one / half dozen of the other. At the end of the day,
YES, forums
require some changes to habits, but with email notifications
of new
threads, I don't think there is a need to "hang
out" AT the forums to
be active.

Best

Keith

I agree 100% with Markus's list opt-in suggestion.

Like many on this list, I monitor (passive) email all day
and night.
Experience tells me that having to make a constant
deliberate effort to
visit, revisit, and revisit again, the forum site, will
reduce the
number of readers and contributors, and therefore likely
reduce its
overall value. I will join the forum and give it a fair
shake, and we
will see.

Onward...

Or better yet, drop a forum front end on top of an existing
set of
lists:

Announcement: New MIVA Community Tool on the Horizon
user name
2006-03-24 00:44:16
Well, having used numerous forums including such formats as
BBSes, FidoNet,
email lists, web forums, Yahoo groups, Usenet, live chat
forums and all the
rest during the 27 years that I have been online, I can pick
out just a
handful that have motivated me to participate:

Email lists (like this)
BBS/FidoNet discussion groups
Usenet
Yahoo groups (via email)

That's it. I have posted about 1000+ messages in the Miva
email lists since
2001, about 1000+ through BBSes/FidoNet, several hundred
through Usenet, and
several hundred through Yahoo groups.

And, despite the fact that I am a member of probably 20-30+
online forums, I
would guess my total forum posts number about 150-250. In
all forums. Ever. In
all of 27 years.

But I know Miva does what Miva wants. Although I really hate
to see such a
strong community dissipate in the blink of an eye, I
understand that Miva has
made a decision to discontinue the email lists, and there is
little or (more
likely) no chance that anything I say will affect Miva's
decision.

As for the argument that we can use "email
notifications of new threads" to
stay active: Been there, done that. I turn on notifications
long enough to get
an answer to a specific question, then I turn it off. Who
really wants dozens
of emails in their inbox with titles such as:

New thread: Shipping cost configuration??? I'm totall...
New thread: Can't login to my store any more and I ne...
New thread: What's the best way to turn thumbnails in...
New thread: I am having problems getting my data out ...

And when you look at the email body? "Visit the forums
to view this thread!"
No, I don't think so.

I do find it amusing that Miva's biggest strength, the Miva
lists, is being
removed. The community that has formed around the lists may
well be called,
"The Miva Fan Club". And yet Miva believes it
will be better off if the fan
club is dismantled and replaced by an online forum. Minus
most of the fans.

I can honestly say that this is the stupidest decision that
I have seen Miva
make, ever. Shutting down the lists cannot easily be undone.
And the longer
the lists are gone, the less likelihood there is that they
will ever be
restarted with the same spirit and vitality that currently
exists.

But go ahead, Miva: feel free to kill the Miva Fan Club.
You'll be doing it
with your eyes wide open.

Tom

Announcement: New MIVA Community Tool on the Horizon
user name
2006-03-24 01:25:02
Oops, my mistake! I thought incorrectly that I would only
receive notification
that a new message had appeared in the forum, but without
additional
information. But it was just pointed out to me offlist that
the notification
message will contain the text of the FIRST post that starts
each thread.

Unfortunately, it appears there is no email reply
capability.

Just wanted to correct my prior misstatement regarding
Vbulletin
functionality.

Tom
