Webboard: max_allowed_packet in 3.2.38

I'm running 3.2.38 and after collecting a fairly small db
(about 3 Gbytes) and running indexer -Eblob, it processes up
to a line that says processing url ... then there are piles
of characters displayed on the screen, and it fails with the
error about exceeding max_allowed_packet size.

I have set max_allowed_packet to 256M on both the server and
the indexing machine but am still getting the error.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
