Problem with the address bar

Normally when you type a search term into the standard
firefox address
bar, it takes you to the most relevant site for those
terms/words. But
recently I've been getting a popup that says "The URL
is not valid and
cannot be located". This only appears after I type it
in the search
box. any ideas?
