iPhoto does, in fact, load NEF files.
However, it is notorious for pigging out storage space with multiple iterations of each image
not matter what the source. "Originals" (not yours, iPhoto's) , "Modifieds", "Thumbnails", etc.
Which would be fine if it were obvious where they are and how to get to them. But if you're in
the habit of storing your own originals and versions as part of your workflow you're doubling
and quadrupling the amount of disk space used my your photographs. It's iPhotos dirty little
secret.
I can't say whether or not Aperature exhibits the same behavior
