I am currently a want-to-be D200 owner... haven't made the leap yet.
I currently shoot film with a Nikon F80 and digital with a little
Nikon S10 (Nikon recently replaced my less than a year old Nikon S4
with the S10 because of warranty issues that could not be fixed after
ending up back at Nikon repair for the 3rd time since October 2006!!)
I have made my want-to-be ownership known and was advised by one D200
owner "The D200 is a great camera if you shoot in manual.... with the
D200 is that it does not have all those settings on the dial that the
other cameras do. Ya know, the portrait, sports, nighttime, etc. It
is actually very different from the D70 as far as settings go." I
have not had the opportunity to ask if you can shoot successfully in
Auto or not. Can you? I like the auto setting on my F80 when I am
in a hurry and don't have time to figure things out manually (I
haven't had as much time as I would like to spend with my optics...
life has thrown me/ us some punches.)
We do not have a Nikon dealer where I live so I have to do a lot of
research on the camera without being able to touch and feel it, and
grill a salesperson on the features and what it can and/or can't do!
We are birders... and are interested in photographing the birds we
see, too.
Would you recommend the D200?
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me...

Mary Ann, I have a D200 and the auto setting is not
available but you can shoot in Shutter priority, apperture priority, and Program
mode, as well as manual! BTW, I just got back from Costa Rica the middle
of March, the camera worked very well while we were out looking for birds and
reptiles! here is a link to some the images that I shot http://www.pbase.com/digital_kelly/cr you
will find all sorts of birds animals and things that we saw. good luck
with your search
