Everyone is correct The D200 does have an on board flash. I just never use the thing so I was thinking it did not have one like its distant uncle the F100 my mistake.
When I need a flash I pop on the SB-800 or fire up the Studio Flashes just old habits..

The other things that I think of just off my head:

Memory: Compact Flash vs. SD cards

Remote Connection: I don't think the D40 has a hard wired Remote trigger only IR.

Flash: the D200 Has no On board Flash.

External Flash: Flash Shoe and PC connection.

Ken Rockwell has a review of all the Nikon cameras.

Take what Ken writes with a grain of salt as this is his opinion, which is at least better than a sales pitch.

Debbie, so long as you are using a proper exposure, you will have virtually no grain... noise. but if you underexpose the image even at 100 ISO, you will have grain. this is true for every brand and model of camera on the market today... it has always been this way! If you are happy with the D80, then more than likely you would not need the D200, however if there are features that you would not have on the D80 that you want, then go for the D200. ; The D200 is unsing nearly 2 year old technology and the D2xs... the next step up... is using even older technology... many people say that the D200 produces an image that is even better than the D2xs because of the newer technology...

As far as the D40 or D40x, well they are great entry level cameras and in order to use auto focus must have an AFS lens... this camera requires the lens to have a focusing motor in it as the camera does not... the D80 can use any lens but some will not meter ;however the D200 can use any lens and they will all meter. I have the D200 and a D70... since I got the D200 I have not shot over 10 images with the D70... the D200 is much heavier and just has a much nicer feel to it! here is a link to my pbase gallery and nearly 100% of the images here have been shot with the D200. ; http://www.pbase.com/digital_kelly/root&page=all
the following link is to my Costa Rica images... http://www.pbase.com/digital_kelly/cr you will find many low light images here as well as some that were shot with flash lights.
http://www.pbase.com/digital_kelly/percussion&page=all this link is to a gallery that was shot at many different ISO's and several at ISO 1600, I have not used any noise reduction software on any of these images. Even where there is grain... noise, it is much less than we would have had if this were Tri-x 400 or even pushed to 1600! ; This camera is just a very nice camera, and I have no regrets about buying it! I think that the D200 is a great camera and even if they came out with a D300 tomorrow, I don't know why I would need or want to upgrade!

Hi,

I am new here. ; And I don't own a Nikon :(

Here's the story. End of January of this year, I wanted to upgrade from an Olympus E500. ; Wanted image stabilization in some form or another. I didn't have any knowledge of the D200 (actually didn't until today). I WANTED the D80 for absolutely sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt. For some reason, I can't get myself to buy a Canon (and everyone cheered).

A lady that I was friends with by email for a few years (now we aren't in contact), said I just HAD to buy a Pentax K10D. ; What's a Pentax, I said. ; Well, I have one. Basically, I am happy with it. I HATE the external flash. I had an external flash before on the Olympus, and this flash is just unpredictable. And well, it's time to start investing in more lenses, etc., and as I am sure you know, Pentax's future is on the cutting board right now.......

So....I am back looking at cameras....two reasons, one our local camera store is offering some great seminars, etc., but only for Canon and Nikon people (and one other, maybe Sony?). Plus a friend of mine just bought the D40X, and so Nikon is all the talk again.........

So....I have been reviewing Nikon cameras, and I honestly think the D200 might be the way to go. Unfortunately, money is an issue, so I want to make sure this is the right choice. Right now, I have done 8000 pics since January, two weddings, and a few other events. I don't plan on weddings being a regular thing, but will do them once in awhile, plus I do some baby pics, and kid pics, otherwise, it's all hobby stuff--flowers, animals, etc.

Questions: the big concern I have is noise. Everything I read about the D200 sounds great, except about the noise. Is it really that bad? I hardly go up to 1600, and the Pentax isn't all that great at that either.
Also, other than the plastic/metal, what is the difference between the D200 and the D40X? ; I am used to the heavy camera, because the Pentax K10D is built like a tank.
Other than a BIG price difference! Like I said, I haven't heard of the D200 until today, but it really interested me.

I don't know if I will sell the Pentax, or keep as a backup. Right now, my back is a high end p&s, but I know that's not the best thing.

So....convince me

Debbie

Well now you have given me some ideas....

There are two BNSF rail yards less then 3 miles from where that photo was taken. And there is a huge inter modal yard over south of Dallas.
There has to be something to shoot around there at night.

Thanks Ron, looks good against stationary targets, I still need to
