Sorry for the long delay in the reply... I was on vacation... still should be but had a huge problem arise which I will address separatly.  I understand your point and I am not exactly sure how to address it in camera... my first thought would be to save the highlights, and then use noise ninja or the like to fix the left over noise.  Does that sound reasonable?

Kelly that makes sense, however I am shooting situations (stage
lighting ... white male in black suit against black backdrop, usually
lit with a spot). If I expose for the shadows, the important
highlights (person's face) get blown... So I'm interested in best
technique and work flow in this situation. Any suggestions?

> Mike in short, there should not be any shaddows! I know that you
cant always control that, but where ever there are shaddows or
underexposed areas, you will have noise... that is the law of the
land! So, to minimize grain, minimize the shadow/underexposed areas!
