| What is the best program for Windows

I want to synchonize my PC clock to pool.ntp.org under
Windows XP.
I don't need extreme accuracy; within a tenth of a second is
plenty
good enough. If possible, I would like the software to
calculate
the fixed drift of my PC clock and do periodic updates
without
putting any un-necessary burden on pool.ntp.org. Most of
all, I
want the software to be reliable. Suggestions?

About the only way to burden the pool would be to
intentionally abuse a
client via some other means. ;)
I like to use Meinberg's NTP build for Windows. The
installer will disable
the windows w32time service for you, and they have a GUI
monitoring client
you can also DL and run to help configure NTP and monitor
its performance.

The best free binary is available through Meinberg which
includes an
installer. They are just about to release a new version
which got held
up by a small bug in the NTP source code. I expect that they
will be
able to make the new version available next week now that
the bug has
been fixed.
The binary will place almost no burden on the pool. You are
querying the
pool no more often that every 64 seconds early on and every
1024 seconds
when it's settled down.
See http://www.
meinberg.de/english/sw/ntp.htm for Meinberg's download
pages but I'd suggest you wait a few days before you
download it so they
can get the new version in place.

The built-in Windows Time Service can do 16ms resolution,
and does
slew the system clock. If you're satisfied with that, and
don't want
to install anything else, you can just type this at a
command prompt:
w32tm /configure
/manualpeerlist:"us.pool.ntp.org,0x1" /
syncfromflags:MANUAL /update
w32tm /resync /rediscover
You can replace the us.pool.ntp.org with
<mycountrycode>.pool.ntp.org
as appropriate. The ",0x1" after the server name
tells Windows Time
Service to use adaptive polling interval lengths, similar to
the
"real" NTP.
Monitoring the Windows Time Service is a challenge, though.
All you
get is a few event log entries at seemingly random
intervals. The
Meinberg NTP binaries for Windows should be used if you need
any
better accuracy or more advanced functionality.

The above was posted on Sat, 23 Jun 2007. I am writing this
on
Sat, 30 Jun 2007 -- a week later.
http://www.ntp.org/
downloads.html has these version numbers:
Current versions of NTP
Release Version Date
Production 4.2.4p3 2007/06/29
Development 4.2.5p57 2007/06/28
http://www.
meinberg.de/english/sw/ntp.htm has these version
numbers:
ntp-4.2.0a mbg-fluxcap-v2-o-win32-setup.exe NTP v4.2.0a,
NTP v4 stable development release ... This
"stable" version
is based on an old release (4.2.0a) that has been enhanced
with a number of important Windows specific bugfixes.
ntp-4.2.0b 1.1436mbg-xmas-o-win32-setup.exe NTP v4.2.0b,
NTP v4 tested development release ... A number of bug
reports indicate that this version can cause instability
on certain systems, a stable version is available for
customers
experiencing such a problem with this version.
Am I wrong, or is Meinberg four versions behind?
If so, is this a problem?

4.2.4p3 has been released and the only change between it and
4.2.4p3-RC1 is
the version number string in the code and documentation.

I Downloaded it and installed it on a quad-processor Windows
2000 Advanced Server system.
It disabled the standard Windows Time Service and is running
as a service, but I see no
menu items, or desktop/toolbar icons for it. Is there a
user interface that I can
bring up to see the status?

Try Meinberg's Time Server Monitor, which you can download
at
http://www.meinberg.de/english/sw/time-server-monitor.h
tm
You can also use command-line tools provided in the basic
distribution.
Programs ntpq and ntpdc are located in your ntpd
installation directory,
in the bin subfolder. Refer to the following pages for
usage notes:

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/html/ntpdc.html
Hope this helps,

Meinberg also has a GUI monitor client that you can download
from their
site. You can use it to see what is going on with NTP, along
with some
various configuration options and debug stuff.

Guy,
It has the same commandline tools as the other versions, so
a quick
ntpq -p will show if things are OK. You can also use the
Event Viewer to
look for NTP-related items. "Synchronised to
<server>" is a sign the
program is working as well.
For long-term monitoring, there are some Windows-related
hints here:

http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/ntp/NTPandMRTG.txt
Cheers,
David
