Dear Tammy,

Both Dr. Rona Novick and myself are interested in participating in your e-Group on bystander involvement.  We have been working with schools in the NYC and Long Island areas on bully prevention for 7 years.  Our prevention program, BRAVE (Bully Reduction/Anti-Violence Education), focuses on bystander intervention and changing school climates so there are more opportunities for positive social-emotional learning.  Our department, The Alliance for School Mental Health, is part of the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System.

If you need more information about either of us or our organization, please let me know. ;

Dear Colleague

We posted details of our Initiative a little while ago and wished to update you on the call for members of our 5 e-Groups.

We have now established how the groups will work and have a number of members for each one from the UK and US. However, we wish to ensure as many organizations as possible have the opportunity to have an input into the process so we are calling for interested individuals/organizations to express their wish to join one or more of the e-Groups

The 5 e-Groups are:

  • The relationship between bullying and other violence, including knife and gun related attacks
  • The role of the bystander
  • Effecting change in bullying behaviour
  • Sharing knowledge, expertise and ideas amongst 'peer activists'
  • Building people's confidence after bullying and supporting transition

How will the e-Groups work?

I will be acting as the virtual Secretary for each Group. Each Group ;has been charged by the Chairman, Lord Brett, with producing, by July 2006 if possible, an agreed paper for submission to the Management Committee, setting out the issues on both of the Atlantic, priorities for action and some recommendations for, if possible, joint activities between organizations in the US and UK, at both NGO and Government level. These are our initial thoughts, however each of you will have your own views as what should be discussed.

  • Each member needs to let me have a paragraph about themselves/organization and their interest in a particular e-Group(s)
  • Each member can e-mail me items for discussion between the members of the group and what they would like to see in the final report
  • As the ultimate objective of the e-Groups is to each produce an agreed position paper I will use the comments and discussion topics and any papers sent to me to produce the first draft paper which will then be the subject of comments, e-mail correspondence, revisions etc. between each Group
  • Each member of e-group will be expected to contribute to the Report and to talk to any member of the group on a one-to-one basis or e-mail all the members of the group
  • Membership of the e-group is flexible and any member can recommend to the e-group additional members to join the group
  • From time to time, and with the groups approval, I will e-mail drafts of our document to our mailing list and also post it on the Initiative's Bulletin Board to receive wider comment for our consideration
Each e-Group will evolve over time and establish its own pattern of working. You might have your own views as to how we should be working - please feel free to voice your thoughts and opinions.

What we want to achieve, if at all possible, is a positive, jointly considered, way forward in dealing with this serious issue using expertise from both sides of the Atlantic. I am sure we can all learn from each other's experiences and together can make a difference.

I look forward to receiving your response, suggestions and papers, which I will circulate to the specific group to "start the ball rolling". In the meantime if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Very best wishes

Tammy
