It occurred to me that Chris Kantarjiev wrote in
gmane.os.netbsd.ports.x86-64:

That's just a cosmetic thing. These names reside in the
kernel, and result
in large tables. For a normal system this isn't that much
of an issue, 
but in case of a installation kernel this space be put to
better use.

I follow your logic, but I'm not entirely convinced, since
the installation 
kernel *does* know and print the name of, say, the IDE
controller.

Since the kernel isn't finding the disks, I'm suspicious
that this is a 
symptom/clue...
