Well, I think the thing to do then it to revert to the
backup copies of the config files you changes (if you have
them) then change them one at a time and see what is causing
the problem.
If you don't have them, then a restore from the NEtBSD April
3.99 install CD, and then change the files (again, one by
one, with a reboot each time).
There are a few things you haven't answered, such as:
What are the entries you are providing for each of the
config file changes (what edits are you making)? If you
show what you are doing to each file, people who know NetBSD
can help you find errors in your configs. Without content,
there's nothing to help with).
Does poffd show up as an active process (now, on the
non-LCD-capable install)?
Does the poffd show up as an active process on first real
bootup, or scroll past on the LCD as bootup occurs, on the
initial install? As someone else said, poofd looks like it
is usually present on 68k systems; I assume that Dennis put
it on there for a reason, I am guess so that paneld works
properly, but I have no idea- and it isn't present on my
system.
My guess is that something you are asking the LCD to display
is too long or misconfigured etc. and it gives up. There
should be a process or two associated with the LCD display
and the paneld, if it's all still running, so output of a ps
-ax would be helpful.
I'm sure once you post some actual data about what you are
doing and the state of the system, people will have ideas.

I have tried changing every config file back, however once
its
screwed it seems to stay screwed, however I will try again
tonight

Yes, I noticed this this morning after the latest install,
as soon as
it rebooted it did "Starting Up > poffd" before
displaying the ip and
hostname on the LCD display.

Will do. Do I just do "ps -ax" from the command

Silly question: what do you mean by "screwed"? Do
you just mean that the
panel isn't displaying what you think it ought to be
displaying (the
Qube's IP), or that the whole system crashes?
I must admit that I've been reading all these posts and I'm
not sure
what the actual status is... I had assumed that after you
"configured"
the system post-initial-reboot that you had a doorstop
sitting in front
of you.
That's apparently not true since you can modify your config
files.
So... does the system come up? Can you ssh/telnet into it?
If so, is the
only problem that the IP address isn't displaying?
Is it possible that the "display IP address on
panel" process is simply
never running? Last time I checked, the panel will simply
display the
last thing you asked it to display until you tell it
something else. Is
it possible that the "Starting up> poffd" is
just the last thing
displayed, and the new ISO image doesn't enable the IP
address display
by default?
Just a thought. I don't know about others, but I'm totally
confused here. :(

Sorry you are correct, as far as I can see the system is
fine, just
no info on the LCD after the last process that started up.

Yes you are correct, I do not have a doorstop, the system is
fine.

Yep, it's as trivial as no IP address displaying on the
pannel.

Yes I think you are correct, remember I'm a newbie to bsd,
and also
being told that the LCD is known to crash confused me even
more.
I did see a while ago a little howto on setting up the port
as a
device so I could echo whatever I wanted to it, but I can't
find it
now.
Also does anyone know the name of the process that displays
the IP on
the LCD and how to start it?

Just for the record I think the previous ISO that I had that
was fine
was 3.0 not 3.99.17.

I just did the following:
/dev/MAKEDEV panel
rm /dev/lcd
ln -s /dev/panel0 /dev/lcd
The panel is fine and I can echo whatever I want to it. So
heres the
question, what process displays the ip & domain on the
machine.
It's apparent that I obviously had 3.0 rather than 3.99.17
installed
before. I feel like a bit of a muppett.

... And that was it, as soon as I rebooted after using that
makedev
command the domain and ip are on the lcd, case closed.
