Hello,
I'm using COBALT Cache RaQ 2 with 256MB RAM running
NetBSD/cobalt 4.99.4
as a NAT router in my room. The outline of my use is like
this:
-----------+----------- main stream (connected to the
Internet)
|tlp0 OCN registered /29 network
+-+-+
|RaQ| NAT
+-+-+ /
|tlp1
---+-----+----------- private subnet (testing network,
192.168.1.0/24)
+-+-+
|P C|
+-+-+
Here, when I download large files such as iso images of
NetBSD or Solaris
Express on PC, the traffice rate at tlp0 and tlp1 decreases
and finnally
it becomes zero. And the PC gets offline.
My assumption is following. What is the possibility?
1. RaQ 2 is too slow to handle large traffic.
2. The HUB I'm using on private subnet is too weak.
3. tlp(4) has some problem.
4. other
If 3 is the true reason, what shoud I do to debug or improve
it? Do I have
to show more information about my RaQ2?

Hi,
Reason #1 should be brushed away. This box is not that slow.
Just keep
an eye on the processes and the memory usage during
transfers. Any
unusual CPU% or memory consumption surges should raise a
flag.
Reason #2 must be tested and this is easy to do: just bypass
the hub by
connecting your PC directly to tlp1 with a cross-over cable.
Then you will be down to #3 and on.
Hope this helps.

Maybe more info about statistics (systat vmstat, vmstat -i,
ipfstat,
or any kernel messages on console) might help.
BTW, does it also happen on GENERIC kernel?

As a guess, I'd go with 5. ISP is limiting large downloads
(and screwing
it up), but I'd verify that with my ISP.
If you can, you could borrow/buy an off the shelf NAT device
to take the
RAQ out of the path and see if anything changes.

I've set up my Cobalt to be a gateway/pf firewall just the
other day.
I have a similar setup except:
o I'm using a Qube2
o I'm using NetBSD 3.1
o My tlp0 is connected to a wireless game adapter which
connects to a
wireless router. That router then connects to my cable
modem.
I'm downloading the NetBSD live CD right now, and it has
been steady
around 300KB/sec for about 10 minutes. I'm downloading on a
PC which
is on the tlp1 NAT private network.
I don't think there is a big difference between our
machines.
