Hi there,

I'm new to this list, and fairly new to the fundementals of
NetBSD,
I've played with FreeBSD in the past and loved it. I'm
guessing there
are going to be similarities like all *nix OS's.

But anyway, the reason I'm mailing this list is my RaQ1
seems to get
"stuck" while netbooting the ISO advertised on
http://www.netbsd
.org/ports/cobalt/ (
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/cdi/cobalt/NetBSD3.99.1
7-restoreCD.iso
)

I've posted a topic over at:
http://www.bsdforums.org/forums/showthread.php?t=50410
- they
reccomended I come here, so here I am. This is what I read
over the
RS232 cable and where it gets stuck:

I've attempted this with different hard disks/jumper
configurations,
the RaQ will boot it's original stock OS without any
problems.

If anyone may be able to reccomend a way to get this
installed, I'd be
extremely happy, I want to put this server into small
production at
somepoint as a backup web/mail server.

Richard Hamilton-Frost

Hmm. I'm not too smart about this stuff, but that seems like
an actual
kernel booting problem on your hardware, as opposed to the
multitude
of other possible booting problems there have been.

I believe the next thing to show up is the PCI bus.

Have you tried a different CD? I thought there were a few
others.

Please try 4.0_BETA2 kernels (which should work with old
userland):
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-4/200706250002Z
/cobalt/binary/kernel/

4.0_BETA2 INSTALL works from netboot on my RaQ1.

Hmm, how does one inject one of the newer kernels into the
ISO though,
sorry to be all idiot on you?

I've grabbed another ISO I found floating about, gonna give
that a try.

Thanks.

Richard

Please see restore cd howto. Using that document you can
inject new
kernel. Just replace kernel without replacing anything
else.

Alex

You only need to follow parts that describe copying files
out of cd.
Then replace kernel that is served over nfs with your
desired kernel. I
would also replace kernel that is installed with your
desired kernel. Do
not replace user land or installation files. Burn new cd and
see if it
works. I would make an image and boot it in virtual machine
like
http://www.virtualbox.org
/. I tried it and it works well with virtual
box. Saves you some cds.

Alex
