I don't know how it works for dvdrip, but I can play DVDs
with mplayer
using the following command:
% mplayer -dvd-device /dev/cd0d dvd://
A generic way to make it work is to add
ln -s cd0d /dev/dvd
to /etc/rc.local, which removes the obligation for the
-dvd-device
parameter. It also works on vlc (which does a lot better
with
desynchronization due to too slow playback, but becomes
unuseable on
Via boards where the time warps back and forth), where again
you have
to change the device in the Open Disc dialog to /dev/cd0d.
