You should be able to still do your manual configuration.

The real bummer with recent X is configuring resolutionrefresh_rate
The driver tends to pick the highest refresh rate the
monitor is
capabale of.  This is painful when you might use one of two
monitors,
and, say, one will do 1600x120085Hz, but the other one
1280x102460Hz.

(Or using ctl/alt/- to try to select between refresh rates
when you
switch between a CRT (85Hz) and an LCD (60Hz) at the same
resolution.
