2006-Q1 latex and environment variables

hm

I used to have

export FLO_LATEX=/home/flo/latex

in the environment, so that

\documentclass[11pt, a4paper,
german]{$FLO_LATEX/generic/f-brief}

in a LaTeX document fetches the correct file.

This doesn't seem to work anymore with teTeX from
pkgsrc-2006Q1.
Any suggestions?
