and resources.xml |

Hi,
to find "a home" for support resources like Chats,
Wikis and Blogs i
propose the following changes:
1. Changes to resources.xml
http://www.ma
rkweinem.de/resources.html
* Changing the title from "Other NetBSD resources"
to "More NetBSD
resources". It's surely just a matter of style or
taste, but a page
with the title "Other..." containing a section
"Other" sounds somehow
jarring.
* added:
- "Online chats" (IRC, SILC) , "Wikis",
"Blogs", "Fun and advocacy"
* removed links:
- "NetBSD Brasil..." as site is not available
anymore and
- "BSD User Groups (Searchable database)", link
moved to
gallery/groups.xml.
2. Changes to gallery/index.xml
http://ww
w.markweinem.de/gallery_index.html
Section "Support" gets additional link:
"Internet forums, Newsgroups,
online chats and wikis". It links to resources.html.
That's it, please review, comment and help to improve.
thanks & best regards, Mark

I'v committed this, thanks.
I wonder if we should merge the resources.xml file into the
gallery main
page, though - giving an overview on all the topics first in
gallery/index.xml, then having all the details from
resources.xml right in
there. This would remove another page that's not easy to
find, esp. with
the title it currently has.
Patches gladly welcome, as usual.

If nobody objects i will make the patch.
But i think that the page title "NetBSD Gallery"
is confusing and
misleading. "Gallery" for me suggests only images
or pictures (photos of
developers, hardware or events, screenshots, posters etc.)
- but no the
whole universe of NetBSD-related resources. So what do you
think about
changing to a more suitable title?
Something like "All about NetBSD", "The
NetBSD Universe", "The World of
NetBSD", "NetBSD Pathfinder", "NetBSD -
all the resources" or whatever
best regards, Mark

My association for "gallery" is like in
"exhibition", showing various
aspects of NetBSD. Not only pictures/screenshots, but also
user groups,
articles, etc. as we currently have.
Maybe something like "NetBSD Resources" or
"NetBSD Showreel"?

Perhaps http://pp.kv.net.
pl/nbsd/index.html will inspire you a bit?
Present Gallery resembles thief's bag. Everything that can
be snatch
up are thrown into Gallery. Exhibitions are created with
visions, Mr
Feyrer. Galleries are divided according to subjects, history
periods,
etc. And WWWs are not exempt from the design process. I
suggest to blow
up the old gallery and build in the place something new,
with separate
pavilions, that is, pages.
It can be observed you, from NetBSD circles, don't pay much
attention
to others' ideas. You like to wade in a mire of old things
and thoughts.
No wonder you are bogged down in a morass of WWW old
layout.
The sorry state of your WWW comes from the fact that only
few are
spunky enough to name the state of the matter as it is. For
a few
years I heard here and there complaints about NetBSD WWW.
And not much
changed from that time.
Regards,

You're welcome to join in in a constructive way.
If you have patches, let me know.

I didn't write it to be nasty, I was rather sad.
One way to improve WWW is to change the WWW in small
fastidious steps
which will change a little and lose overall picture.
The other mode is to make bigger changes starting with a
core design. I
don't want to play with trifle changes. It would use my
whole time
available to NetBSD.
It is not my next war with you but another attempt to
convince
you for changes. Why not start to change WWW with Gallery
part? Mark
Weinem is doing marvellous job but within the old framework.
So he
faces from time to time walls and asks how to dodge them.
With your
consent. He stops where he shouldn't.
You have all HTML pages in XML form. Look at them as Lego
bricks. Use
them to attach according to new WWW framework. You'll get
new
functional design. What's more, if you once make a script
which would
do it for you, you'll get mighty tool for future page
shuffling.
I resort to other technique. I did create NetBSD WWW
Wrapper. Your HTML
pages are modules I can move here and there making only
small
adjustments in templates. Then I run Rexx scripts and got
what I wanted.
Kind regards,

I agree that a revolutionary approach may be better than an
evolutionary
approach. But it's also a lot more work, which seems to be
the problem.
As for Mark running into walls, I guess that can be made
easier in the
medium timeframe at least, if there are too many patches for
me to commit.
