Sorry for my late response. Thank you for the hint, which
unfortunately
didn't work out.
Before I used vs. 3.0.1, I used 3.0, in which 1024x768
worked great. So
it's not a hardware issue. Other thing is, that after
installation I
could start X without having XF86Config in /etc/X11. I
haven't been able
to locate another XF86Config, so my guess is it gets its
settings from
somewhere else. But where?
