I've recently kickstarted the buying and fiddling of
Jornadas as a
result of a massively successful thread on the Something
Awful forums.
Not only are these people in love with the handheld itself,
they're
also excited over the chance to use a new operating system.
Many have
tried Opie Familiar with the general opinion that it's a
mess of
frequent lock-ups and clunkiness and are looking elsewhere
for the
ultimate in PDA functionality. Unfortunately, beyond several
'iffy'
distributions of Debian packaged in various ways, there
seems to be
very few.

That's where you guys come in. I've seen numerous screens
of NetBSD
alive and kicking on the Jornada 720 and am astonished to
see a
~March~ release specifically tailored to some issues found
with the
handheld. For whatever reason, I've found it very difficult
to find
any info on how to go about actually installing NetBSD and
the How-To
present on this site appears to not only be out of date with
the
recent release, but missing a few key, much needed features.

I am specifically requesting an in-depth, easy to follow
tutorial on
how to not only install NetBSD on your average, unmodified
Jornada 720
by means of Linux ( Specifically Knoppix as it's easy to
obtain, burn,
and use in less than an afternoon ), but how to install and
properly
configure an X environment usable by the masses as an
everyday, easily
used, and ultimately portable workstation. The absolute
ideal
situation would be for someone to prepackage an image of
NetBSD with X
preconfigured and a few helpful applications already
installed, but
anything would really be a godsend to several dozen people
eager to
try this operating system out for themselves.

For an idea of what I'm looking for, point your browsers in
this direction:
http
://www.lowlevel.cz/log/pivot/entry.php?id=41

Thank you for your time! If this has already been done, a
thousand
apologies. A link would be appreciated like nothing else and
would
make countless new Jornada owners extremely happy.

See the Palmtop NetBSD article:

And this paper (written for hpcsh port, but most also
applies to hpcarm):

I appreciate the effort immensely, but I'd like a brand
new,
user-written tutorial that takes full advantage of what the
new
incarnations of NetBSD have to offer. Both of these articles
are two
years old. I'm looking for a Linux-specific installation
method that
teaches users not only how to install the NetBSD operating
system on a
Compact Flash card, but a little info on general use such as
obtaining
applications off the web, configuring X, and the like. Think
NetBSD
for Morons. Beyond the initial installation process, my goal
is to
have a simple setup, complete with GUI and basic PDA
functions, that
your average Joe Shmoe could use without too much trouble
and a
tutorial on how to reach exactly that.

Sorry if I'm sounding a bit demanding. I just don't want
this device
to fall to out of date info now that it has a hefty load of
brand new
users. Long live the Jornada!

Hi Tobias,

Those docs Peter pointed you to are still relevent, the
install procedure has
not changed.

However if you want a more recent tutorial i wrote an
article for the NetBSD
wiki.

You can get it at
http://wiki.onetbsd.org/index.php/How_to_inst
all_NetBSD_on_a_hpcarm

please note this configures swap on the flash card, you
probably want to
disable swap all together (not sure how you do that but it
can be done).

There is also the oreilly articles these can be found at:

http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2003/06/05/Big_
Scary_Daemons.html
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2003/09/25/Big_
Scary_Daemons.html

Thats as close as your going to get for an all in one
tutorial from
installation to 3rd party apps installed.

You will need another machine that can build NetBSD from
source. Linux will do
here is some info on how to get the NetBSD sources and get
it built
htt
p://www.netbsd.org/guide/en/part-compile.html.

As for getting full PDA functionality i don't think it is
possible. The 720
has only 32MB of memory. NetBSD doesn't use much but X uses
a lot. Also if
you do compile a program you can pretty much guarantee that
the windows will
not fit on the screen.

As for configuring X you dont need to, just issue startx at
the prompt and you
are away.

Hope that at least gets you started.

Hello,

There is another way to install NetBSD on a Jornada that
doesn't require a
second machine at all. I created an install kernel that runs
on the Jornada
720 and provides the menu driven installation system. Think
of it as the
equivalent of a bootable NetBSD CD for the Jornada. You can
get instructions
on how to use it here:

http://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-hpcarm/2003/01/07
/0001.html

I know the docs are old, but I know that the install kernel
can
successfully install NetBSD 1.6 and 2.0. I haven't tried
2.1 or 3.0, but I
don't see why it wouldn't work. Perhaps it should get
added to the wiki? I'd
be happy to add the info, but I'm somewhat wiki-ignornant,
so if someone
could point me to a wiki tutorial that would be great.

Thanks,

Jason M.

Not exactly - I have a 728, Valeriy has an hpcsh, 680 IIRC,
and all the
screenshots and installation part were done by Valeriy.

The talk/paper was aimed at Jornadas in general.

I have, somewhere, a script which makes an image in a vnd,
populates
it with sets, and then does some minor configuration. This
was
written specifically for my Jornada, with the aim of
transferring it
to CF by dd - I can make it available if people would like
to see it,
there may be some agc-specific configuration items in it.
