| 3.0.1 SE/30 & IIci init problem |

|
2006-09-06 01:08:16 |
I was using NetBSD 1.6 on an SE/30, IIci, and Quadra 650.
That was
several years ago and much has happened since then. I
thought I
should bring my machines up to date and get back involved in
the
community but I am unable to get NetBSD/mac68k 3.0.1 running
because
it fails on bootup with the /sbin/init error 8 problem. I
found some
references to this problem on the mailing list earlier this
year but
I didn't see a solution other than go back to 1.6 or 2.x.
Any ideas?
Several years back I was working on creating a NetBSD/mac68k
cluster
to build packages with and in that process I acquired 7 Mac
IIci
computers and 2 Quadra 650 computers. I was hoping to start
getting
these up and running using NetBSD/mac68k 3.0.1 but I have
not been
successful. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Did you install a complete NetBSD 3.0 distribution, or did
you just try
to boot a NetBSD 3.0 kernel on your existing 1.6 system?
Also, which
kernel are you using? (GENERIC, GENERICSBC, a customer
kernel, etc...?)
Also, have you tried one of the INSTALL kernels? I don't
think they actually work for installing, but I think
they should at least boot all the way and start sysinst.
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-3.0/mac68k/netbsd-INS
TALL.gz
or netbsd-INSTALLSBC.gz depending on which SCSI driver you
need.

I installed the complete NetBSD/mac68k 3.0.1 distribution
using the
traditional method with Mkfs, the installer, and so forth. I
used the
GENERICSBC kernel.

I attempted the INSTALLSBC kernel on the Color Classic, but
that was
the only machine. I read somewhere that sysinst cannot
install to the
correct partition or something. Maybe that is no longer the
case. I
can't remember where I read it at who knows when last night
(this
morning).

Hmm, can you copy/paste the results of an ls /libexec and ls
/lib from
the installer mini-shell?

Yeah, I remember hearing about sysinst problems too... I was
just
wondering if the INSTALLSBC kernel started sysinst, or if it
gave the
same error 8 about init?

I am reinstalling 3.0.1 on the IIci right now. It should be
done by
morning and I'll take a look and get that info to you. I am
attempting to install the 20060902 snapshot of netbsd-4 on
the SE/30
right now to see if it has the same issues.

INSTALLSBC and INSTALL (I think I tried both) boot just fine
with no
init issues. However, sysinst cannot install sets from ftp
or CD-ROM.
The tar command fails on errors about no space left on
device. I
tried installing sets from ftp on both the SE/30 and IIci
and then I
tried installing from the CD-ROM on the SE/30 with
essentially
identical results.

Ah, that's because the filesystem to be installed to is not
mounted.
ISTR that's the problem with the installer. After the
filesystems
have been created, you can escape to shell, manually mount
the filesystems,
then return to the installer, and should be able to get a
good install
from there.

OK. I'll attempt to use sysinst if the current run fails.
Maybe that
will work.

The SE/30 install with the 20060902 snapshot resulted in the
identical init error. Do you want the results of ls /libexec
and ls /
lib from the 20060902 install or should I attempt a
reinstall of 3.0.1?

The 3.0.1 install on the IIci was going fine installing the
man.tgz
set at which point I stopped it. I tried making devices then
but I
had to restart the installer for that to work. I then
rebooted to
find that my hard drive no longer boots at all and does not
show up
in the Finder. I'll have to repartition it if I can in the
morning. I
have had major drive problems lately. I had a 1 GB HP hard
drive die
(?) on me during initialization with HD SC Setup. I am also
having
trouble with a 4 GB Quantum SCA drive with SCA to SE adapter
in my
Quadra 650. I have a number of the 4 GB drives so I guess
I'll try
another one. I am wondering if using an SCA adapter would
cause
problems.

Recent install documentation describes a workaround.

I thought I recalled reading here that sysinst hasn't
worked since 1.6.2
or maybe 2.0. Anybody else remember that?
I've also heard of various failures with 2.x and 3.x...SCSI
problems, or
errors after long uptimes with heavy activity. (I think
that latter one
was John Klos.) Am I completely misremembering? I've
never seen a
complete list of recent m68k issues assembled in one place.
