There's a valkyrie driver in the current linux kernel, no
need to go

Yeah, I know.  I looked at how to set palette registers
there.  But  
I'd rather keep away from reading GPL code, if possible...

What about licensing?  Won't that be an issue?  I thought it
would 
preclude us from borrowing much of anything from Linux.
