Hi all,

pardon for the post if it happens not to be directly
relevant to the
macppc port...

In short, I get "bad system call" (followed by a
core dump) when using
pthreads (e.g. pthread_create eventually faulting at
sa_register)... I
am not sure if this has something to do with my kernel
config or
not... (naturally, NetBSD v3 does not exhibit the
problem...)

If anyone has any clues - will be appreciated...

If you have a current kernel, you must have a current
libpthread.so as well.
if they are mismatched, you will have problems (like you are
having).

mmm cool - so how would I go about getting the current
libpthread?
Firstly, I have built the kernel (as well as userland tools)
via
build.sh script (i.e. I upgraded NetBSD v3 to netbsd-current
from cvs
inclusive of kernel, userland tools as well as pkgsrc)... so
if
libpthread is a part of the whole system, then should it be
already in
sync? Secondly, (in case if it was a part of pkgsrc) I had a
look at
packages, ( in /usr/pkgsrc/devel) but there were only two
pthread
entries (something like pthread-stublib which was indicated
to be for
old NetBSD versions and pthread-sem which did not seem to
be
relevant)...

It's in src/lib/libpthread
Just cd there, make, make install clean. You might need to
either set 
USETOOLS=no ( to use the host compiler ) or 
TOOLSDIR=/wherever/your/tools/are to use compiler etc. built
using 
'build.sh tools'
If your userland is older than 4.0 I'd strongly recommend
getting a 
snapshot from releng.netbsd.org and updating the whole
thing.

Please torture it a bit, threaded programs used to be a
little tricky. 
I'll list a few observations and I'd like to know if it's
just me or if 
others can confirm them.
For instance firefox didn't really work prior to newlock2 -
it would 
either crash on startup or show a messed up user interface (
as in text 
misplaced and with wrong attributes ). Now it's rock stable
( by 
firefox standards at least ). I'm using pkgsrc/www/firefox.
Konqueror was usable but occasionally you'd get 'the process
for the 
http protocol died unexpectedly' messages, usually after it
was swapped 
out and back in. Just reloading the page cured it - after
newlock2 I 
didn't see that again.
Things like KDE or heavily threaded gtk2 applications seem
to run 
smoother but occasionally the whole machine locks up for a
second or 
two, probably IO related.

I think my NetBSD v3 (albeit on AMD Athlon, i386port) is
quite before
that time and I found it was/is always quite stable with
firefox
(running w/o swap partition, but rather with swapctl on file
which is
encrypted via cgd).

The only thing I was able to experience (problem-wise) was
running Ion
(http://modeemi.
cs.tut.fi/~tuomov/ion/) window manager with my video
app (http://www.vislab.uq.edu.au/research
/accessgrid/software/advideo/status.html)
which is, potentially, pthreads-hungry AND it uses
X(Un)LockDisplay
quite a bit... when switching the display between various
windows I,
occasionally, was able to lock the program... but then again
(even
though I could not reproduce the problem on linux) it could
just be my
code that is the source of a problem 

So in short, I didn't have any real pthread-related problems
on NetBSD
3 (in fact, recalling it now, it was also running fine with
audio i/o
app on Celeron box which used 2 or 3 pthreads and DMA access
on
soundcard)... just my 2 cents...

In comparison to Linux, I have recently noticed (man pthread
page)
that there are a few env. variables to control pthreads
scheduling/behaviour - may be they have some effect on
stability
issues? What are your settings wrt aforementione envs?

About two weeks ago, in -current only - it's the reason why
you had to  
update libpthread.
