Hi all,

just a quick question in case I am missing some step and
doing
something wrong...

My iBook G4 is booting and running NetBSD-current just
fine... but
whet it comes to shutting it down, I do:

shutdown -h now

which goes through its processes ok:

"System shutdown time has arrived
About to run shutdown hooks...
Stopping cron.
Stopping inetd.
Waiting for PIDS: 603.
Removing block-type swap devices"
Then it prints some date...
then
"Done running shutdown hooks.
syncing disks... done
unmounting file systems... done
halted"

... then:

"
trap: pid 0.-4443349 (): kernel MCHK trap 0x37cb8c
(SRR1=0x149030)
panic: trap
Stopped at netbsd:cpu_Debugger+0x10: lwz r0, r1, 0x14
db>
"

It is not 100% reproducable as sometimes the system halts
just fine...
another times the system would print tho whole
"never-ending" sequence
of same messages (don't have the exact contents right now -
I can't
reproduce this case at the moment) - like it was is in an
endless
loop...

And sometimes the error is different to the aformentioned
"trap" thingy:

"
halted

Stopped at 0x9449084: lfd r13, r0, 0x49a8
db>
"

It really was not a high priority for me - as I can always
just hold
the power button until the whole thing is off (all of the
above issues
happen after the filesystem is unmounted so there is no
"checking
system" during the next boot)... but it would be nice
to see if this
is caused by me doing something wrong...

as a side note - after some reboots (which end in
"panic trap" or
similar problematic messages), the iBook looses its
"saved" boot
parameters (so that the "flashing question" mark
pops up when booting
takes place next time) - could the 2 issues be related? I.e.
during
shutdown something somether writes into memory which keeps
the iBook's
boot settings (e.g. in some openfirmware thingy) - or am I
completely
"out of band" here ? I think I am "out of
band" ... and by a long shot

have tried with USB keyboard... no luck (keyboard does no
respond)
although this time it was shutting down OK most of the time
(I
managned to "crash" it only when I unplugged the
keyboard after
booting, and then plugged it in again and then typed the
shutdown
command)...

mmm how? Keyboard by that stage does not respond... - I
shall try with
a USB/external keyboard in a sec...

yep... appears to work on mine as well (have tried it 3
times so far
and all time it appears to shut down cleanly...)

Thanks

Can you get a stack trace? ( use the bt command )
For the records - my iBook G4 ( 12" 800MHz ) doesn't
show this
behaviour, it just powers down when it's supposed to.

have fun

There's a sysctl to set a command to run on ddb entry (
forgot which
one exactly but it should be easy enough to find ) - just
set that to
bt

Hmm, we don't mess with OF settings in the kernel at all.
Battery
getting old?

ok - got some images of the crash... don't know if I need to
compress
them harder for this list (will be about 3 to 5 images) -
took them
with those digital camera things, so by default they are
~2Meg for
each image...

how would you like them?

Each sent as a separate email to your email account only, or
to the list?

Compress each image more? What is acceptible size for the
list/your-email-account then?

Or is there a way to "save" the "bt"
dumps of ddb to a flie?

Kind regards
Leon.

oh for crying out loud

ok - I got this flickr thing happening (had to register on
flickr

am certain
I am going to forget the damn passwords anyway :-] ... then
had to
wait for the stuff to upload, then had to name, tag and
describe the

the upshot is
that I will have the "infrastructure" made in case
I need to post
further snapshots... (if I manage to remember the 47th

alternatively my next machine will be an intel-based laptop

Oh with all that bitchin - I have almost forgot the link:
