PowerMac 7300/200 boot problems (current)
country flaguser name
Canada

Hi, I have just compiled and installed a GENERIC
netbsd-CURRENT kernel and I
am running into problems on boot. The machine, as stated in
the subject is an
original PowerMac 7300/200. I do not have access to a serial
cable for it,
seeings it uses the mini-din style connector; otherwise I
would provide full
boot messages. However, the last line it outputs before it
hangs is:

ofb0: 640 x 480, 8bpp

Then, a newline is outputted, and the cursor sits on the
first column of that
line, and the computer hangs.

I hope that was a descriptive enough report, if anyone
decides to help me and
needs more info I will be happy to give it.

Hrm, that machine has /chaos/control hardware, doesn't it?
I thought I fixed that. So the lower half of ofb finds the
framebuffer
just fine ( or you wouldn't see any output at all ) but it
doesn't make
it to the upper half ( which attaches to PCI ) for some
reason.
Strange, but should be pretty easy to fix, I'll look at it
in a minute.

That was a stupid typo I made ages ago which only bites if
the display
device has no 'address' property. Fix is committed, sorry
about that.

Depends - the onboard graphics chip sucks but you can always
get a PCI
graphics board with the right firmware ( PCI Voodoo3s can be
flashed
with freely available Mac firmware for instance ), the CPU
can be
upgraded ( even a 300MHz G3 with 1MB cache isn't all that
slow ) and
the machine can take up to 1GB RAM. OHCI cards go for about
$10 these
days.
More modern desktops like KDE3 aren't all that CPU hungry, a
300MHz G3
is fine, even for most of the eye candy - they only want a
lot of RAM.

I have an ATI Mach64 PCI video card, it doesnt seem to see
it from
openfirmware, but when I boot with -CURRENT, there is a
machfb IIRC, does
that mean I can use it?

Maybe, if it has an OF ROM it's likely you can use it.
Machfb supports
most mach64, notable exceptions are ancient ones ( which map
only one
BAR, no idea what exactly is wrong there since these cards
seem to be
pretty rare and I don't have one. Those were retroactively
renamed to
Mach64 before ATI came up with the Rage name, the number on
the chip
would be something like 88xxx and it would have 2MB VRAM or
less ),
some mobile variants ( Rage LT ) and some Rage XL ( again,
no idea
what's wrong - no hardware ). If yours is a (3D) Rage I, II
or Pro it
should Just Work. If the card works in MacOS then we'll
likely be able
to use it, either with machfb ( exceptions above ) or ofb
for the rest.
OpenFirmware should see the card - there should be an entry
named
ATY,Mach64 or something similar under /bandit. Let
output-device point
at it and OF should wake up with console on the ATI card.

have fun
Michael

Depends, those modules sometimes show up on ebay or your
local flea

you need are

the motherboard
